Surface rust often cleans off in use, but corrosion that pits the friction face or eats into the disc edge does mean replacement.

Signs discs need replacing

Pulsing or vibration through the pedal or steering under braking
Deep scoring or grooves in the friction face
A pronounced lip on the outer edge
Measured thickness at or below the minimum
Heavy corrosion, common on cars used for short journeys
Cracking or heat discolouration

What the job involves

Measuring disc thickness and checking run-out
Replacing discs in axle pairs with new pads
Cleaning the hub face so the new disc sits true
Checking caliper and carrier condition
Correct torque on all fixings, then bedding in and road test

Why discs and pads go together

New pads on worn discs wear quickly and unevenly; new discs with old pads transfer old friction material onto a fresh surface. Replacing them as a set on the axle gives the most consistent braking.
