Noises and what they can mean
- A light squeak first thing in the morning — often surface rust burning off
- Persistent high-pitched squeal — glazed pads, dust, worn shims or sliders
- Grinding — commonly friction material worn away, needing immediate attention
- Squeal that stops when braking — can be a worn wear indicator or wheel bearing
- Noise from one wheel with heat or a smell — possible sticking caliper
When new pads still squeal
New pads can bed in noisily for a short period. Noise that persists can point to glazing, the wrong pad and disc combination, worn caliper sliders or hardware that was not cleaned and lubricated during fitting.
What we check
- Pad thickness and wear pattern on both sides of each caliper
- Disc thickness, scoring, lipping and corrosion
- Caliper piston and slider operation
- Hardware, shims and anti-rattle fittings
- Wheel bearings and shields that can mimic brake noise
What to do
If the noise is grinding, or the pedal has changed, book it in rather than waiting. Call 07440 140340 and we will get it inspected.
