It will usually get worse, and a badly slipping clutch can overheat and damage the flywheel — which increases the cost of the repair. Get it inspected sooner rather than later.

Symptoms of a worn clutch

Engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate — slipping
Judder or shudder as the clutch engages
High bite point, with the clutch engaging near the top of the pedal
Hard or crunchy gear selection, especially into first or reverse
Heavy, sticking or spongy clutch pedal
Burning smell after hill starts or heavy traffic
Noise when the pedal is pressed or released

Diagnosis first

Not every clutch complaint is a worn clutch. Hydraulics, master and slave cylinders, release bearings, linkages, gearbox wear and dual-mass flywheel condition all produce similar symptoms. We check the cause before quoting a full clutch job.

What replacement involves

Removing the gearbox to access the clutch assembly
Replacing the driven plate, cover and release bearing as a kit
Inspecting the flywheel, crankshaft seal and gearbox input shaft
Replacing or machining the flywheel where required
Checking or replacing hydraulics, including concentric slave cylinders
Reassembly, bleeding and a road test to confirm operation

Why the flywheel gets checked

Fitting a new clutch to a worn or overheated flywheel is a common cause of judder on a freshly repaired car. We inspect it while the box is out and tell you honestly whether it needs attention.
