Dual Mass Flywheel Replacement

A dual mass flywheel absorbs engine vibration through internal springs. When those wear out, you hear it long before the clutch gives up.

Rattle at idle?

Signs of a failing dual mass flywheel

  • Rattling or rumbling at idle that changes when the clutch pedal is pressed
  • Vibration through the floor or pedals at low revs
  • Judder when pulling away
  • A knocking noise when switching the engine off
  • Excessive rotational free play measured during inspection

Why it matters

A collapsed dual mass flywheel can shed material, damage the starter ring, upset clutch operation and in severe cases damage the gearbox bell housing area. It is also the most common reason a new clutch still judders.

Options

Depending on the vehicle and how it is used, options can include a like-for-like dual mass replacement or, on some applications, a conversion. Each has trade-offs in cost, noise and drivability — we will explain them for your car rather than pushing one route.
