Do timing chains need changing at a set interval?

Most are not on a fixed replacement interval, but they are not lifetime items either. Condition, noise, oil history and fault codes decide it.

My chain only rattles for a second on cold start — is that a problem?

It often indicates a tensioner that is not holding pressure. It is worth investigating early, before the chain and guides wear further.

What the timing chain does

The chain performs the same job as a belt, driving the camshafts from the crankshaft, but it runs inside the engine and is lubricated by oil. Its condition depends on the tensioner, the guides and the oil it has been run on.

Symptoms of chain and tensioner problems

Rattle on start-up that settles after a few seconds
Continuous chain rattle or a metallic whirr
Camshaft and crankshaft correlation fault codes
Rough running, misfire or poor starting
Loss of power or unstable idle
Metal debris found in the oil or filter

Why it should not be ignored

A chain that has stretched or a guide that has broken can jump timing under load. On interference engines that can mean valve and piston contact and major internal damage. Early diagnosis is usually far cheaper than the alternative.

What replacement involves

Diagnostic confirmation, including live camshaft timing data where available
Access to the chain, which can require removal of covers, sump or ancillaries
Replacing chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets as specified
Renewing seals and gaskets disturbed during the work
Oil and filter change, then verification and road test
