Turbo Replacement

Turbo failure often has an underlying cause. Oil supply, restriction and boost control are checked first — otherwise the new turbo goes the same way as the old one.

Lost boost or smoking?

Symptoms of turbo problems

  • Loss of power or limp mode under load
  • Whistling, siren or grinding noise from the turbo
  • Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust
  • Rising oil consumption
  • Overboost or underboost fault codes
  • Sticking variable geometry actuator

Diagnosis before replacement

  • Boost pressure logging against target values
  • Checking for intake and intercooler leaks
  • Inspecting oil feed and return for restriction or contamination
  • Assessing shaft play and turbine condition
  • Testing actuator and vane operation
  • Checking DPF and exhaust restriction, which can mimic turbo failure

What replacement involves

  • Removal of the turbocharger and associated pipework
  • Cleaning or replacing oil feed and return lines
  • Checking the sump and oil condition for debris
  • Fitting the new or reconditioned unit with new gaskets and studs where needed
  • Priming, leak checking and road testing with boost data monitored
