Can a wet belt be inspected rather than replaced?

Inspection usually requires much of the same dismantling as replacement, and evidence of degradation may already be in the oil. We will advise on the most sensible approach for your engine and its history.

What a wet belt is

Several manufacturers use a belt-in-oil design for the timing drive, the oil pump drive, or both. The belt is designed to operate immersed in engine oil and is quieter and more compact than a chain, but it is sensitive to oil condition, oil specification and service intervals.

Symptoms of a deteriorating wet belt

Low oil pressure warning, which can indicate a blocked pickup
Rattle or unusual noise from the front of the engine
Timing-related fault codes or camshaft correlation codes
Rubber debris found in the sump or on the oil filter
Rough running, poor starting or a sudden loss of drive
Overdue or unknown oil change history

Why wet belt failure is serious

As the belt degrades, small pieces of material circulate with the oil and can restrict the oil pump pickup. Loss of oil pressure can damage bearings and the whole engine, sometimes before the driver has any warning. It is one of the few wear items where neglect can write off an otherwise healthy engine.

When replacement may be required
