Symptoms of a failing starter motor
- A single click with no cranking
- Slow, laboured cranking with a good battery
- Grinding or whirring without the engine turning
- Intermittent starting that improves when tapped or when hot or cold
- Starter staying engaged after the engine fires
How we confirm it
- Battery condition and cranking voltage test
- Voltage drop across cables, earths and the solenoid feed
- Current draw during cranking
- Checking ignition switch and relay signals
- Inspecting the flywheel ring gear for damage
Replacement
