Alternator Replacement
The alternator keeps the battery charged and the electronics fed. When it fades, the car will usually run until the battery runs out — and then stop.
Battery light on while driving?
Symptoms of alternator failure
- Battery or charging warning light while driving
- Dim or flickering headlights, especially at idle
- Repeatedly flat battery despite a new battery
- Whining or grinding from the alternator
- Burning smell from the belt or alternator
- Electrical items behaving oddly or the car cutting out
What we test
- Charging voltage and current output under load
- Voltage drop in charging cables and earths
- Auxiliary belt, tensioner and pulley condition
- Smart charging control on vehicles that use it
- Battery condition, because a failed battery can imitate this fault
Related work
Alternator work usually means removing the auxiliary belt. Where the belt or tensioner is worn, replacing it at the same time saves labour later. Vehicles with a battery sensor or smart charging may also need coding after a battery change.
