DPF Regeneration

Regeneration burns accumulated soot out of the filter. It is effective when the filter and the engine are in a fit state — and pointless when they are not.

How regeneration works

The engine management raises exhaust temperature to burn soot into a much smaller volume of ash. This happens passively on longer runs, actively under management control, and can be forced through diagnostic equipment in the workshop under the right conditions.

Before we attempt a regeneration

  • Soot and ash loads are read to confirm regeneration is appropriate
  • Sensors, EGR and boost are checked for faults that would cause failure
  • Oil level and condition are checked, as diesel dilution can be a risk
  • Any fault preventing regeneration is identified and quoted

Honest expectations

Regeneration is not a cure for a filter full of ash, a failing sensor or a mechanical fault. Where the data shows the filter is beyond regeneration, we will say so and discuss cleaning or replacement instead of taking money for a process that will not last.

Keeping it clear afterwards

  • Complete regenerations rather than switching the engine off part way
  • Include a longer run at sustained speed where your journeys allow
  • Keep to correct oil specification and service intervals
  • Deal with warning lights early rather than driving on them
