What the timing belt does

A toothed rubber belt drives the camshafts from the crankshaft so that the valves open and close in exact relation to piston position. On many engines the same belt also drives the water pump. It is a wear item that is replaced preventatively, not repaired.

Rattling, slapping or whirring from the timing cover area
A high-pitched squeal that changes with engine speed
Coolant loss or a leak near the belt cover, which can indicate the water pump
Rough running or a sudden change in performance

Why failure is serious

On an interference engine, a snapped or jumped belt allows valves and pistons to meet. The typical result is bent valves and damaged valve seats, and in worse cases pistons, the cylinder head or the whole engine. The cost of a preventative belt change is a fraction of that repair.

Why professional installation matters

Timing a belt one tooth out can leave an engine running poorly, low on power or damaged. Correct locking tools, correct tensioning and correct torque figures matter more here than on almost any other routine job. We replace the kit rather than the belt alone, because a failed tensioner destroys a new belt.
