What decides the cost of a wet belt replacement

Wet belt prices vary far more between engines than most people expect. Here is what actually changes the figure.

Why there is no single price

Wet belt jobs are labour-led, and the labour depends entirely on how the engine is built. Two cars of similar value can differ substantially because one needs far more dismantling than the other.

What changes the figure

  • Whether the sump has to come off to reach the belt and oil pump drive
  • Whether the oil pump chain or belt is replaced at the same time
  • Engine access — subframe, mounts and ancillaries that may need removing
  • Whether the kit includes tensioners, seals, gaskets and a new water pump
  • Oil and filter, which are always replaced as part of the job
  • Any damage already caused by belt debris in the oil system

Where people get caught out

A quote that looks low sometimes covers the belt alone. If debris has already circulated, or the oil pump drive is not replaced, the job can need doing twice. We set out what is included before you commit.
