Braking

Steering wheel shakes when braking

Where and when you feel the shake matters. Vibration only under braking generally points at the braking surfaces; vibration all the time points elsewhere.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • Steering wheel wobbling as you slow from higher speeds
  • Pulsing felt through the brake pedal
  • Worse when braking downhill or from motorway speed
  • Uneven wear visible on the disc face

Possible causes

  • Warped or unevenly worn brake discs
  • Uneven pad deposits on the disc surface
  • A sticking caliper heating one side
  • Worn suspension bushes or ball joints letting the hub move
  • Loose or unevenly torqued wheel fixings

What you can do

  • Note the speed range where it happens — it helps us a great deal
  • Avoid heavy repeated braking from high speed until checked
  • Mention any recent brake or tyre work

How we check it in the workshop

We measure disc thickness and run-out, check caliper and slider operation, and inspect suspension joints and wheel fixings.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Get it checked soon. It is usually a wear issue rather than an emergency, but braking performance is affected.
