What the noise can indicate
- One loud click and no crank — commonly the starter solenoid or starter motor
- Rapid clicking — often a battery too low to hold the solenoid in
- Click with dash lights dropping out — battery, terminals or main earth
- No click and no lights — battery, connections or an immobiliser fault
- Click then a grinding noise — possible starter pinion or ring gear damage
Checks that are safe to try
- Try the spare key
- Make sure the car is fully in park or neutral
- Check battery terminals are clean and tight
- Note whether the problem is worse when cold or after a short stop
Why testing beats replacing
A battery, a charging fault and a starter motor can all produce a click. Voltage drop and current testing tells us which one it is, so you are not paying for a starter that was never the problem.
