The main variables
- Whether the engine has a single-mass or dual-mass flywheel
- How much dismantling the gearbox removal requires
- Front, rear or four-wheel drive layout
- Whether a concentric slave cylinder is fitted inside the bellhousing
- Condition of the release bearing, hydraulics and crankshaft seal
- Whether the flywheel can be reused, machined or must be replaced
Why the flywheel matters so much
A dual mass flywheel can cost more than the clutch kit itself, and it cannot be machined. Fitting a clutch to a worn flywheel is a common reason a freshly repaired car still judders.
Doing it once
Because most of the cost is removing the gearbox, replacing worn related parts at the same time is usually cheaper than a second visit. We explain what we recommend and why before starting.
