Signs your DPF is blocking up

A DPF rarely blocks without warning. These are the signs worth acting on before it becomes a replacement.

Common symptoms

  • DPF or engine warning light appearing, often after town driving
  • Noticeable loss of power or a limited performance mode
  • Cooling fans running hard and a hot smell after a drive
  • Rising fuel consumption and frequent attempted regenerations
  • Rough idle or a change in exhaust note
  • Oil level creeping up from fuel dilution during failed regenerations

Why it is blocking

The filter itself is usually the victim. Failed regenerations, EGR faults, injector condition, sensor errors and a driving pattern with no sustained runs are the usual underlying reasons.

What early action saves

Caught while soot load is still high but the filter is sound, the fix can be diagnosis and a regeneration. Left long enough, ash loading and damage move it to cleaning or replacement.
