Warning lights

DPF warning light on

The DPF light means soot has built up beyond the level the system is happy with. Whether a drive will clear it depends on why it built up.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • DPF or exhaust warning light, often after short journeys
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Cooling fans running hard and a hot smell after driving
  • Rising fuel consumption
  • Engine oil level creeping up

Possible causes

  • A driving pattern with no sustained runs to complete regenerations
  • EGR faults putting excess soot into the filter
  • Injector condition affecting combustion
  • Faulty pressure or temperature sensors
  • Ash loading at the end of the filter's life
  • Incorrect or degraded engine oil specification

What you can do

  • Do not keep driving in limp mode hoping it clears
  • Note whether the oil level has risen — it can indicate failed regenerations
  • Have the cause diagnosed before paying for cleaning or replacement

How we check it in the workshop

We read soot and ash values, differential pressure, exhaust temperatures and regeneration history, and check EGR and injector data before recommending anything.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Book it in soon. Early action often means diagnosis and a regeneration; leaving it can push the job towards cleaning or replacement.
