Noises

Clicking or knocking noise when turning

A click that appears on lock and speeds up as the wheels turn faster is typically driveshaft related rather than a suspension knock.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • Rhythmic clicking on full lock, often while manoeuvring
  • Clicking that gets faster as you drive faster
  • Vibration under acceleration
  • Grease visible around the inside of a wheel

Possible causes

  • A worn outer CV joint
  • A split CV boot letting grease escape and dirt in
  • Worn inner joints causing vibration under load
  • Worn suspension joints producing a similar knock
  • A loose driveshaft nut

What you can do

  • Look for grease thrown around the inner wheel rim
  • Note which way you have to steer to hear it
  • Have it checked promptly if grease has been lost

How we check it in the workshop

We inspect the boots and joints for play and grease loss, and rule out suspension joints and bearings on a road test and lift inspection.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Have it seen to. A split boot rarely improves and a failed joint can leave the car undriveable.
