Symptoms drivers describe
- Rapid clicking and dimming dashboard lights when you turn the key
- One solid clunk, then nothing
- Dashboard lights bright but no crank
- Starts after a jump, then fails again a day or two later
Possible causes
- A discharged or failing battery, often the most common cause
- Corroded or loose battery terminals and earth straps
- A worn starter motor or sticking solenoid
- A failing alternator that has not been recharging the battery
- A parasitic drain flattening the battery overnight
- Poor engine-to-body earth connections
What you can do
- Note whether the clicking is rapid or a single clunk — it narrows it considerably
- Check the terminals are clean and tight if you are comfortable doing so
- Avoid repeated cranking attempts, which can overheat the starter
- Tell us whether it has been jump started and how long it ran afterwards
How we check it in the workshop
We test battery condition under load, measure charging voltage and current draw, check the starter feed and earths, and look for a parasitic drain before replacing anything.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Not dangerous, but a car that needs jump starting will usually leave you stranded again. Worth checking sooner rather than later.
