Whining noise when accelerating

The useful question is whether the whine follows engine revs or road speed, because that separates belt and turbo noises from gearbox and differential noises.

Symptoms drivers describe

A whine or siren-like note that rises with revs
A whine that changes with gear rather than revs
Noise louder when steering at low speed
A whistle under boost on turbo engines

Possible causes

A worn auxiliary belt tensioner or idler pulley
Alternator or power steering pump bearing wear
Turbo bearing wear or a boost leak whistling
Gearbox bearing wear, often gear-dependent
Low power steering fluid on hydraulic systems

What you can do

Note whether it follows revs or speed, and which gears
Mention any loss of power alongside the noise
Avoid hard driving if it is accompanied by smoke or power loss

Is it safe to keep driving?

Get it identified. Some causes are minor; turbo and gearbox bearing wear is not.
