Rattling noise on start-up that goes away

A short rattle from cold that clears once oil pressure builds is a common early warning. Ignoring it can turn a chain job into an engine job.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • A few seconds of rattle or chatter on start-up
  • A metallic whirr from the timing end of the engine
  • Timing-related fault codes or rough running
  • Rattle lasting longer as time goes on

Possible causes

  • A stretched timing chain or worn tensioner and guides
  • A slow build-up of oil pressure from a worn pump or wrong oil
  • Low oil level or long-overdue oil changes
  • Auxiliary belt tensioner or pulley wear
  • A loose heat shield resonating from cold

What you can do

  • Check the oil level and note when it was last serviced
  • Do not leave it if the rattle is getting longer
  • Tell us the exact engine and mileage so we know the known patterns

We listen to locate the noise, read timing correlation data where the engine supports it, and check oil condition, level and pressure before advising.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Investigate early. Chain and tensioner wear tends to accelerate, and a jumped chain can damage the engine.
