Oil pressure warning light on

Of all the dashboard lights, oil pressure is the one to take most seriously — running an engine without pressure can cause damage quickly.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • Red oil can symbol on the dash
  • Light flickering at idle or when cornering
  • Ticking or tapping noise from the engine
  • Light on with a low oil level on the dipstick

Possible causes

  • Low oil level, sometimes from a leak or consumption
  • A failing oil pressure switch or sensor
  • A worn oil pump or blocked pickup
  • Incorrect oil grade for the engine
  • Internal wear reducing pressure at idle

What you can do

  • Stop safely and switch the engine off
  • Check the oil level once the engine has cooled
  • If the level is correct and the light stays on, do not keep driving

We check level and condition, then measure actual pressure with a gauge rather than relying on the sensor before advising on repair.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Treat as urgent. Continuing to drive with genuine low oil pressure risks serious engine damage — recovery is the safer option.
