Symptoms drivers describe
- Deeper or louder note, worst on acceleration
- Puffing or ticking from under the car or bonnet
- Smell of fumes around the car
- Vibration through the floor at certain revs
Possible causes
- A corroded joint, box or pipe
- A split flexi pipe
- A blown manifold or downpipe gasket
- A cracked manifold on some engines
- Failed mountings letting the system knock and split
What you can do
- Have it checked before an MOT — leaks are a common failure point
- Do not drive with fumes entering the cabin
How we check it in the workshop
We inspect the full system on the lift, locate the leak with the engine running and advise on repair or section replacement.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Fumes entering the cabin should be treated as urgent. Otherwise it is usually a repair to book in soon.
