Symptoms drivers describe
- Engine light flashing rather than staying lit
- Rough running, shaking or a stumble under load
- Loss of power or a limited performance mode
- A smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust
Possible causes
- Ignition coil or spark plug failure on petrol engines
- Injector faults on petrol and diesel engines
- Loss of compression on a cylinder
- Timing faults or a stretched chain
- Wiring and connector problems at the coil or injector
What you can do
- Stop driving where it is safe to do so
- Avoid high revs and sustained motorway speeds
- Call us on 07440 140340 rather than continuing to a garage some distance away
How we check it in the workshop
We read stored and live data, identify which cylinder is affected, then test ignition, fuelling and compression on that cylinder before quoting.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Urgent. Continued driving with an active misfire can destroy a catalytic converter and, in some cases, damage the engine.
