EGR valve symptoms

EGR valves soot up over time, particularly on cars used for short journeys. The symptoms overlap with several other faults, so testing matters.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • Rough idle and hesitation
  • Black smoke from a diesel exhaust
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Engine light returning after being cleared
  • DPF light appearing more often

Possible causes

  • Carbon build-up jamming the valve
  • A failed valve motor or position sensor
  • Vacuum or actuator faults on older systems
  • A blocked EGR cooler
  • Mainly short-journey use never getting the engine fully hot

What you can do

  • Note whether the light keeps returning after a reset
  • Mention your typical journey length
  • Do not assume replacement is the only option — some valves clean up

How we check it in the workshop

We read EGR position and flow data against commanded values, inspect the valve and pipework, and check whether cleaning is realistic before quoting replacement.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Book it in. An EGR fault puts extra soot into the DPF and makes that the bigger bill later.
