Symptoms drivers describe
- Engine turns over normally but will not fire
- No crank at all despite strong lights
- Immobiliser or key symbol on the dash
- Starts after several attempts, then stalls
Possible causes
- A worn starter motor or solenoid
- An immobiliser or key recognition fault
- Crankshaft or camshaft sensor failure
- Fuel pump, filter or pressure problems
- A blown fuse or failed relay in the starting circuit
- Timing belt or chain failure in some cases
What you can do
- Note whether the engine cranks or is silent — it narrows it a long way
- Try the spare key if there is an immobiliser symbol
- Avoid repeated long cranking attempts
How we check it in the workshop
We test battery and charging first, then work through the starting circuit, immobiliser, fuel pressure and crank signal with live data.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Not dangerous, but the car will not move. We can recover it to the Iver workshop if it will not start where it stands.
