Clutch & gearbox

Car judders when pulling away

Judder can be transmission or engine related. Whether it also happens while driving at steady speed helps separate the two.

Symptoms drivers describe

  • Shudder through the car as the clutch engages
  • Worse on hill starts or when carrying weight
  • A vibration felt through the pedal or floor
  • Rough running or a misfire alongside it

Possible causes

  • Clutch friction plate or pressure plate wear
  • Dual-mass flywheel wear
  • Oil contamination on the clutch face
  • Collapsed or split engine and gearbox mounts
  • Misfire or fuelling faults under load

What you can do

  • Note whether the engine also feels rough at steady speed
  • Avoid slipping the clutch to smooth it out
  • Mention any recent clutch work

How we check it in the workshop

We road test, check mounts and fuelling data, and inspect the clutch and flywheel on removal so nothing is replaced on assumption.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Book it in. Judder tends to worsen and can be a sign the clutch is close to failing.
