Symptoms drivers describe
- ABS light lit, sometimes with traction control and stability lights
- Speedometer reading erratically in some cases
- A pulsing pedal at low speed before the light appears
- Hill-start assist or cruise control no longer available
Possible causes
- A damaged or dirty wheel speed sensor
- A failing wheel bearing affecting the sensor signal
- Wiring damage where the loom flexes with the suspension
- A faulty ABS module or pump
- A very low brake fluid level
What you can do
- Check the brake fluid level if you are comfortable doing so
- Leave extra stopping distance until it is fixed
- Have it checked promptly — it is a safety system
How we check it in the workshop
We read the ABS module for codes, compare live wheel speed signals while the car moves, and inspect the sensors, wiring and bearings.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Have it looked at promptly. Braking normally continues but the anti-lock safety net may not be there when needed.
